Saint Paul
born 5-15 AD in Tarsus/Cilicia, died approx. 64 AD in Rome
In old Ireland, epilepsy was known as 'Saint Paul's disease'. The name points to the centuries-old assumption that the apostle suffered from epilepsy.
To support this view, people usually point to Saint Paul's experience on the road to Damascus, reported in the Acts of the Apostles in the New Testament (Acts 9, 3-9), in which Paul, or Saul as he was known before his conversion to Christianity, is reported to have a fit similar to an epileptic seizure: '...suddenly a light from the sky flashed around him. He fell to the ground and heard a voice saying to him: ''Saul, Saul! Why do you persecute me?''...Saul got up from the ground and opened his eyes, but he could not see a thing... For three days he was not able to see, and during that time he did not eat or drink anything.'
Saul's sudden fall, the fact that he first lay motionless on the ground but was then able to get up unaided, led people very early on to suspect that this dramatic incident might have been caused by a grand mal seizure. In more recent times, this opinion has found support from the fact that sight impediment-including temporary blindness lasting from several hours to several days-has been observed as being a symptom or result of an epileptic seizure and has been mentioned in many case reports.
In his letters St Paul occasionally gives discreet hints about his 'physical ailment', by which he perhaps means a chronic illness. In the second letter to the Corinthians, for instance, he states: 'But to keep me from being puffed up with pride... I was given a painful physical ailment, which acts as Satan's messenger to beat me and keep me from being proud.' (2 Corinthians, 12,7). In his letter to the Galatians, Paul again describes his physical weakness: 'You remember why I preached the gospel to you the first time; it was because I was ill. But even though my physical condition was a great trial to you, you did not despise or reject me.' (Galatians 4, 13-14) In ancient times people used to spit at 'epileptics', either out of disgust or in order to ward off what they thought to be the 'contagious matter' (epilepsy as 'morbus insputatus': the illness at which one spits)
Pengalaman do'i terkena ayan tertuang pada kisah para rasul 9 : 3-9

St Paul converted by epileptic fit, suggests BBC
By Jonathan Petre, Religion Correspondent and Jonathan Wynne-Jones
Published: 12:01AM BST 19 Apr 2003
A documentary about St Paul has infuriated Christians by suggesting that the apostle's conversion on the road to Damascus may have been caused by an epileptic fit or a freak lightning bolt.
In one of the Bible's most dramatic stories, Paul was transformed from a zealous persecutor of Christianity into one of its most powerful advocates after being struck down by a blinding light.
Trembling and on his knees, he heard the voice of God asking: "Why do you persecute me?" Soon after, he began the missionary journeys that spread Christianity across the Roman Empire.
The documentary, to be broadcast on BBC1 on May 11, is presented by Jonathan Edwards, the athlete and evangelical. It challenges the belief that Paul's conversion was caused by divine intervention by quoting scientists who link religious experience with epilepsy.
It suggests that the apostle's reference to an ailment which he described as "a thorn in the flesh, which acts as Satan's messenger to beat me, and keep me from being proud" could be the condition.
Professor Vilayanur Ramachandran, the neuroscientist who delivered this year's Reith lectures, told the programme that patients who suffered seizures often had intense mystical experiences like Paul's.
He argued, however, that this did not rule out a divine role. "If God exists and he is interacting with us humans, he could have put an antenna in your brain to be sensitive to him or her," he said. But Canon Tom Wright, a leading theologian who regularly advises the BBC, said that there was "no shred of evidence whatsoever" for the claims.
The Canon, the next Bishop of Durham, told The Church of England Newspaper: "It is a reductionist way of explaining St Paul's conversion and as a theologian I find it offensive that such an idea could be suggested.
"As someone with a family member who suffers from epilepsy, I also find it personally offensive. This casual use is very dismissive of people who suffer from it."
Elaine Storkey, another leading Church of England theologian, told the programme: "An epileptic fit doesn't turn someone's life around. Something else was happening at a much deeper level."
An even more bizarre theory, suggested by Dr John Derr, an American earthquake expert, is that Paul could have been struck by a bolt of electro-magnetic energy, similar to ball lightning, released by an earthquake.
The programme quotes scientists saying that such an event could have triggered what Paul would believe to be a mystical experience, as well as leaving him blind for several days.
While the documentary is inconclusive, and culminates with Mr Edwards praising Paul's "miraculous" mission, it will anger Christians because it follows a series of controversial BBC programmes on religion.
A documentary on the Virgin Mary at Christmas, which contained the claim that she had been raped by a Roman soldier, provoked more than 1,000 complaints. It was condemned by the Vatican and the Roman Catholic Bishop of Portsmouth, the Rt Rev Crispin Hollis, wrote to the Greg Dyke, the BBC's director-general, accusing the corporation of offending millions.
And two years ago, Canon Wright was highly critical of the BBC's Son of God documentary, on which he was an adviser, saying it was deeply flawed and presented Christ as "a politically correct social worker".
A spokesman for Alan Bookbinder, the BBC's head of religion and ethics, said: "The views of millions of Christians who believe that Paul did have a vision of God are fully explored in the programme. Indeed, this view is shared by the presenter, Jonathan Edwards."
Paul's conversion is thought to have occurred around AD 35, and his apostolic journeys took place from AD 47 until he was arrested in Jerusalem in AD 58. According to tradition he was beheaded in Rome

Religious Figures
According to Dr. Jerome Engel, a number of men and women who have attained religious prominence may have done so in spite of, or perhaps due to, their epileptic signs and symptoms. In fact epilepsy, as "the sacred disease," has been profoundly intertwined with religious practices throughout the ages and the world.
Saint Paul's seizure-like experiences are the best documented of the major religious figures. On the road to Damascus he saw a bright light flashing around him, fell to the ground and was left temporarily blinded by his vision and unable to eat or drink. Paul is thought by some physicians to have had facial motor and sensitive disturbances coming after ecstatic seizures; they have diagnosed him with temporal lobe epilepsy which occasionally developed into secondary tonic-clonic attacks.
