40 Pasukan Korsel Masuk Islam di Irak

Sebanyak 40 pasukan Korsel dari 3.600 prajurit yang ditugaskan ke
Iraq mengaku telah memeluk Islam secara sukarela. Mereka beramai-ramai
bersahadat di masjid jami’ Soul

Bedanya dengan tentara sekutu pimpinan Amerika Serikat (AS) yang
bertugas di Iraq yang banyak menimbulkan masalah dengan warga lokal,
pasukan Korea Selatan yang dikirim ke bekas negeri 1001 malam itu justru
menemukan Islam.

"Mereka, yang masuk Islam, itu pernah belajar bahasa Arab ketika kuliah
dan bepergian ke Timur Tengah," tutur Humas Militer Korsel Kapten Lee
Yun-se. Lee menyambut baik langkah mereka. Sebab, hal itu akan sangat
membantu keberadaan pasukan Korsel di Iraq.

Bedanya dengan pasukan AS, sebelumnya, sebelum diberangkan ke Iraq, para
prajurit Korsel itu diwajibkan mempelajari kultur dan kebiasaan bangsa
Arab dan budaya Islam. Saat itulah, 40 orang tersebut menyatakan niatnya
menjadi muslim. "40 tentara itu, dengan sukarela, memperdalam Islam di
Masjid Seoul dan kemudian berpindah agama," imbuh Lee.

Para tentara mualaf tersebut menyatakan diri sebagai Islam dibimbing
Pemimpin Ulama Seoul Sulaiman Lee Haeng-lae. Menurut Sulaiman, langkah
para tentara itu akan mempermudah kontingen Korsel yang dikirim ke Iraq.





"Orang Iraq akan menjadi teman Anda selamanya," imbuhnya kepada para
tentara usai mengucap syahadat. Sebelumnya, di antara ratusan serdadu

South Korean soldiers convert to Islam before Iraq tour

SEOUL: South Korea’s 35,000-strong Muslim community gained 37 new converts on Friday when officers and enlisted soldiers destined for a tour of duty in Iraq were admitted to the faith in a ceremony at Seoul’s main mosque.

South Korea, where Buddhism is the most common religion and Christianity has grown rapidly, has pledged to send 3,000 troops to help reconstruction in Iraq. About 650 South Korean army medics and engineers have served in the country for a year. “You are reborn as believers and believers are true human beings,” Imam Sulaiman Lee Haeng-lae told the new converts at the Seoul mosque, one of five in a country of 48 million people.

Sulaiman, a South Korean leading the congregation in Seoul, said the men’s decision to convert to Islam would go a long way towards helping their 3,000-strong contingent become accepted by Iraqis once it is deployed. “The Iraqis could become your friends for eternity,” Sulaiman told the new converts.

A public affairs officer attached to the unit, Captain Lee Yun-se, said many of the 37 new converts had some background in Arab culture, including Arabic language study in college and travel to the Middle East.

All 3,000 soldiers in the contingent took courses on Arabic culture and customs to help them fit in in Iraq. “The 37 soldiers then volunteered to learn more about Islam at the Seoul mosque and then converted out of faith,” Lee said.

The troops of the Zayitun unit, the Arabic word for “olive”, are awaiting orders to ship out to northern Iraq to help maintain peace and rebuild the country.

But seven months after a pledge by President Roh Moo-hyun and three months after parliamentary approval, the government has yet to officially announce where they will be deployed and when.

A team of liaison officers will leave soon for Iraq to coordinate logistics and operations with the Coalition Provisional Authority and local leaders, the Defence Ministry said.

The 37 new Muslims boosted to 41 the number of Muslims in the Iraq-bound contingent. The other four are military interpreters drawn from the country’s Muslim community. “There is no deity worthy of worship except Allah, and Mohammed is his messenger,” each of the 37 soldiers recited and in return received a copy of the Quran.

They were completing a crash course on the religion, a mosque official said, finishing in 10 days what can take up to six months.

The South Korean Defence Ministry barred the soldiers from speaking to the media covering the ceremony. South Korea is home to another 70,000 Muslims from outside the country, primarily from Southeast Asia. reuters

U.S. Soldiers Discover Islam In Iraq

BAGHDAD, August 13 (IslamOnline.net) – Discovering an Islam that is totally different from the one smeared in their media, a number of American servicemen and women were said to have embraced Islam and married Iraqis.

"After daily interactions with Iraqi citizens and a first-hand experience in dealing with Muslims in the war-ravaged country, many U.S. soldiers willingly accepted Islam, " Sheikh Mahmoud el-Samydaei, member of Iraq’s Muslim Scholars Society, told IslamONline.net Wednesday, August 13.

"The soldiers came to realize that the teachings of Islam are absolutely different from fabricated information propagated by the western media," he added.

The Iraqi scholar recalled crying Christian-turned-Muslim American army officer who lamented that his folks died without knowing anything about Islam.

Not First
A U.S. officer visited the Civil Affairs Court in the Baghdad district of el-Karkh earlier this week to declare: "I bear witness that there is no God but Allah and that Muhammad is His messenger."

The man later married Iraqi doctor Samar Ahmed whom we met while standing guard in Medicine City Hospital.

The American officer confirmed that he embraced Islam out of absolute conviction and not just to marry the Iraqi woman he fell in love with.

According to Islamic teachings, a none-Muslim man is not allowed to marry a Muslim woman.

Judge Abd el-Azeim Mohammad Gawad el-Rasafi blessed the marriage, asserting it was the "first time an Iraqi girl would marry an American soldier who accepted Islam."

He told IOL he found no religious ground to obstruct the marriage, which was opposed by several Iraqi citizens.

"The assertion of the American soldier that he embraced Islam of his free will and not just to marry the Iraqi doctor convinced us to approve the marriage," said Judge el-Rasafi.

Convinced
Although Samar declined to be interviewed, her colleague Doctor Bayda’a Mohammad Ahmed told IOL she had hard times with Iraqis who knew about the proposed marriage.

They accused her of marrying the American officer just to have a chance of going to the U.S. with him, said Bayda’a.

Defending her friend Samar, Bayda’a asserted she was the one who introduced him to Islam and encourage him to accept it.

She found he was a good husband and did not have in min traveling to the States, said the fellow doctor.

Fayez Qadouri, one of several opponents, said the opposition had nothing to do with the fact that the officer was American but rather because he was "an occupier of our land."

"He should renounce his country’s occupation of Iraq and either leave the country to desert the army for us to approve the marriage," he said.

There are some 145,000 U.S. and 11,000 British soldiers deployed across Iraq.
